Thirty-three-year-old Leverkusen midfielder Charles Aranguiz will return to Brazil’s Sport Club Internacional after his contract with Germany’s Red Company team expires this summer. The 97-times-capped Chilean international joined German football on a blockbuster €13 million transfer in the summer of 2015. He departs after a storied Bundesliga career that featured 214 competitive appearances across all competitions for die Werkself.
Aranguiz scored 17 goals for Leverkusen over the course of his seasons spent in North-Rhine Westphalia. A departure this summer was long considered a matter of due course. After much talk, a January transfer was ultimately ruled out. Aranguiz – currently injured – has still made 15 appearances for Bayer this season, netting two goals across all competitions.
His current “pre-contract” with his old Brazilian club will ultimately keep him on the books thorough 2025. Bayer will surely prepare some sort of farewell for their long-time player before the season concludes.
