Chris Wood’s loan move at Nottingham Forest has been made permanent after a clause in his loan contract was activated, according to The Athletic.
Wood came to Nottingham Forest on loan in January from Newcastle United until the end of the season. He was one of seven players signed mid-season by the Reds, and their 30th signing since their promotion.
Since arriving at the City Ground, the New Zealand international has been a key part of Steve Cooper’s side. He has started each of their last three league games, although he is yet to score.
And that third game has triggered a clause in his contract, meaning he will stay at Nottingham Forest on a permanent basis. According to The Athletic, the loan agreement included an obligation to buy for £15 million if he played three or more matches for the Midlands club.
The 31-year-old’s stint at Newcastle comes to an end after just over a year. He was one of the first signings made by the club’s new owners, arriving in January 2022 from Burnley for an estimated £25m. He scored two goals in his debut campaign for the Magpies, helping them comfortably avoid relegation.
This term, he has struggled for regular minutes, finding himself stuck behind the likes of Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak. He has made just six starts for Newcastle this season in all competitions, while featuring a further 16 times off the bench. In these appearances, he scored twice in the Premier League and once in the Carabao Cup.
Up next for Forest is a visit from league leaders Manchester City, before a trip to face relegation rivals West Ham United. As for Newcastle, they face Liverpool on the weekend, before travelling to Wembley for their Carabao Cup final against Manchester United.
