£9m star’s exit ‘would now be surprising’ at Ibrox

Rangers are unlikely to allow star striker Alfredo Morelos to depart Ibrox for Turkey this winter, journalist Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport.

The 26-year-old has entered the final six months of his £33,000-per-week contract with the Gers, sparking speculation that he could depart Michael Beale’s side imminently.

Rangers transfer news – Alfredo Morelos

Despite the Scottish winter transfer deadline passing, Turkey’s doesn’t end until the night of February 8, meaning there is still a chance Morelos could join a Süper Lig outfit.

A report from The Herald has claimed that ambitious side Konyaspor are ‘lining up a shock move’ for the Colombia international as they look to make a push for European qualification.

However, Football Insider have since stated that Morelos is not interested in making the switch to Konyaspor and has even knocked back their approach.

The same report has also disclosed that the South American has not ruled out the possibility of putting pen to paper on fresh terms with Rangers after returning to form in recent weeks.

Beale now runs the risk of losing Morelos on a free transfer over the summer, but it seems as though he will be able to call upon his services for the rest of the season.

What has Jones said about Morelos?

Rangers are currently lagging nine points behind fierce rivals Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership standings.

And Jones has told GMS that he ‘would be surprised’ if the Glasgow giants allow Morelos to depart at the midway point of the campaign.

He said: “I would be surprised at this point, after letting the last transfer window deadline pass, if they now let him go to Turkey.”

How well has Morelos played this season?

Morelos has established himself as one of the deadliest marksmen in Scottish football since arriving from HJK Helsinki back in 2017.

The 5 foot 10 ace has racked up 121 goals and 56 assists in 255 appearances for Rangers across all competitions, claiming one league title and one Scottish Cup crown.

And Morelos has found the back of the net on nine occasions in 31 outings throughout 2022/23, setting up five further strikes for his teammates.

That level of output is why Morelos is still valued at £9 million by Transfermarkt, but Rangers could miss out on a significant fee if they refuse to sell him and he chooses not to sign a new contract.
