Italy boss Mancini on UEFA Nations League draw v England: “We didn’t think we would do as well as we did.”

Italy boss Roberto Mancini has praised his team’s performance against England in the UEFA Nations League.

Gli Azzurri had a chance to extend their lead at the top of the table at Wolverhampton but were held to a 0-0 draw by Gareth Southgate’s England. Both sides had a fair amount of chances to go infront but neither of them did well enough to go in the lead.

After the game, Mancini spoke in the press conference about the performance and stated: “We didn’t think we would do as well as we did. The game wasn’t easy. Some guys made their debuts, others played after playing the last couple of games but they were good.”

He also spoke about Federico Gatti, who was making his Italy debut against the Three Lions. Mancini said: “The team must have a good balance. Despite the goal problem in the last six months, in the games of our management we have scored more than 100 goals but it is true that we have slowed down lately. On Gatti, if I did play him, it is because I think he can become a very good defender for the future.”

Germany were held to a draw by Hungary elsewhere, meaning that Italy remain at the top of their Nations League group.
