Chelsea ‘will definitely not’ sell £50m star at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea will not sell Raheem Sterling, journalist Simon Phillips has informed GiveMeSport.

There has been some talk about the winger potentially leaving Stamford Bridge despite having only arrived there last summer, but Phillips cannot see him departing in this transfer window or the next one.

Chelsea transfer news – Raheem Sterling

Football Insider recently claimed that Chelsea are willing to listen to offers for Sterling after signing Mykhaylo Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk.

The 28-year-old joined the Blues from Manchester City last July in a £50m deal, as reported by BBC Sport, but is yet to show his best form.

In 15 Premier League appearances this season, he has scored just four goals (via Transfermarkt).

The England international, however, was showing signs of improvement before picking up a hamstring injury. He grabbed the opener in Chelsea’s 1-1 draw against Nottingham Forest at the start of the month after providing an assist in a 2-0 win versus Bournemouth the match prior.

What has Simon Phillips said about Raheem Sterling and Chelsea?

Phillips has told GMS that Chelsea are not open to the idea of letting Sterling go, especially this month.

On the former City star, the journalist said: “In terms of would Chelsea be willing to sell him, definitely not this window, and I personally can’t see him being allowed to go in the summer either.

“He’s certainly going to be a player that they’ll want to keep around for solid squad depth as they rebuild the attack and everywhere on the pitch, really.”

Should Chelsea sell Raheem Sterling?

It would be a rash decision to let Sterling go so soon. While he has not been at his best this season, it is still early days. Overall, in the words of one football writer, NBC Sports’ Joe Prince-Wright, he is a “magnificent player”.

In fact, while he may not be showing his City form at Stamford Bridge just yet, Sterling’s attacking numbers are still better than most of his Chelsea team-mates’.

He is their second-highest scorer in the Premier League with four goals and is currently averaging 1.5 key passes per game. No player in Graham Potter’s squad is making more, according to WhoScored.

The above may say more about Chelsea’s other attackers; nevertheless, Sterling has shown glimpses of his true quality. It would probably be unwise to give up on him so quickly, especially when the team as a whole has not been performing this term.
