Atlético Madrid’s newest signing, Memphis Depay, made his debut against Real Valladolid on Saturday night. The official announcement confirming the transfer of the Dutchman from FC Barcelona was made on Friday. Shortly after, Depay was called up as part of the squad for the weekend’s La Liga clash in the Spanish capital.
Memphis came on as a substitute in the 75th minute, replacing Spain international striker Álvaro Morata up front. In his brief cameo on the pitch, he managed to create danger on a few occasions and prepared a good scoring opportunity in which Yannick Carrasco sent his shot just wide of the post as Atlético looked to extend their lead.
While not the most memorable debut for Memphis, the match overall will have Atlético fans delighted. It was an impressive 3-0 rout over Real Valladolid in which the team looked in control and dangerous throughout, with a stellar performance from Antoine Griezmann giving a strong sense of momentum ahead of the Copa del Rey clash against their cross-city rivals Real Madrid on Thursday.
