Everton supporters would be ‘split’ if West Ham United boss David Moyes heads back into the Goodison Park dugout as Frank Lampard’s successor, journalist Simon Phillips has told GiveMeSport.
Lampard is approaching a year at the helm, having been appointed as Rafa Benitez’s replacement last January, but there is serious doubt over his future.

Everton manager news – David Moyes and Frank Lampard
According to the Telegraph, Moyes could be installed as a favourite to move into the Everton hot seat if he is axed by West Ham or Lampard is shown the door.
The report suggests the 59-year-old was set to be sacked by the Hammers if they lost to the Toffees on Saturday, but a 2-0 victory courtesy of a Jarrod Bowen brace has resulted in his job being safe for now while also putting further pressure on his opposite number.
Lampard reacted to his side’s latest setback by admitting ‘we are in tough times’ and Everton are not too good to drop into the Championship, while owner Farhad Moshiri insisted ‘it’s not my decision’ when asked whether it was time for him to wield the axe after the defeat at the London Stadium.
The loss has left the Merseyside outfit in the Premier League’s relegation zone and Lampard is reportedly on the brink of the sack after a boardroom meeting was held on Friday.
Phillips recently told GiveMeSport that Everton would be taking a ‘backward step’ if they opted to welcome Moyes back to Goodison Park nearly a decade after his first spell came to an end.
What has Simon Phillips said about Moyes?
Phillips believes the Everton fanbase would be left divided if Lampard is shown the door in favour of handing Moyes a second opportunity in the dugout.
The journalist has refused to rule out the possibility of the Scotsman returning to Goodison Park and feels the links should be taken seriously.
Phillips told GiveMeSport: “He could probably do a job. I’m sure about that, but I think the Everton fans would be quite split on that one if he did end up coming back.
“I think their hearts would probably say yes, but their heads would probably say no. It’s an interesting link to keep an eye on, for sure.”

How did Everton perform during Moyes’ first spell in charge?
Moyes led Everton to 221 victories over the course of his 518-match reign, according to Transfermarkt, handing him a 1.54 points-per-game ratio.
The current West Ham chief headed to Goodison Park in 2002, following Walter Smith’s sacking, and only moved onto pastures new when Manchester United came calling 11 years later.
Moyes led Everton to a fourth-place finish in the 2004/05 Premier League season, just 12 months after narrowly staving off relegation, while he also guided the Toffees into continental football.
He was named the League Managers Association Manager of the Year three times during his reign, so it is abundantly clear that his initial stint was a successful period for the club.
