‘Private sector of Saudi Arabia now one to watch’ at Old Trafford

Manchester United could attract interest from the ‘private sector of Saudi Arabia’ now they are seemingly up for sale, CBS reporter Ben Jacobs has told GiveMeSport.

The Red Devils have been owned by the Glazer family for the last 17 years, but many supporters have protested against them throughout their time in charge of the club.

Manchester United news – takeover

A statement from the Glazers back in November announced they are “commencing a process to explore strategic alternatives” for United, potentially bringing an end to their tenure at the helm.

“As we seek to continue building on the club’s history of success, the board has authorized a thorough evaluation of strategic alternatives,” it read.

“We will evaluate all options to ensure that we best serve our fans and that Manchester United maximizes the significant growth opportunities available to the Club today and in the future.”

And British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s firm Ineos has officially stated an interest in buying the 20-time English champions.

Only a select few potential buyers will be able to afford United with a recent estimation from The Athletic claimed they are worth around $4.6 billion (£3.7m).

What has Jacobs said about Man Utd?

When asked about potential new owners, Jacobs informed GMS that the Qatar Sports Investment group can be ‘ruled out’.

He said: “With Qatar Sports Investment, they’re not in talks with Manchester United, and they could only minority invest anyway, so they can be ruled out.

“But I’ve said many times that there is interest from the Middle East and North Africa, but not specifically from a Qatar-led consortium. But the private sector of Saudi Arabia is one to watch.”

How are Man Utd performing this season?

United have endured some tough times on the pitch as well as off it recently and have failed to win a piece of silverware since 2016/17.

However, Erik ten Hag took over the reins in the summer following a successful stint with Ajax and appears to have the team on the right track once again, seeing off reigning Premier League champions Manchester City over the weekend.

Consecutive defeats to Brighton and Brentford kicked off the Dutchman’s time at Old Trafford, but those displays are now a distant memory.

With new owners seemingly on the horizon and results on the up, United fans will surely be daring to dream for the first time in many years.
