Wolves interest in £85k-a-week star ‘has come out the blue’ at Molineux

Wolverhampton Wanderers’ interest in West Ham United striker Michail Antonio ‘sort of came out of the blue’, Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor has told GiveMeSport.

The 32-year-old has fallen down the Hammers’ pecking order following the arrival of Gianluca Scamacca in the summer and has been linked with a move to Molineux as a result.

Wolverhampton Wanderers transfer news – Antonio

A recent report by talkSPORT has claimed that Wolves have made Antonio a ‘transfer target in January’ as new manager Julen Lopetegui looks to add some extra firepower to his forward options.

The Midlands outfit have struggled to put the ball in the back of the net in the opening half of the season but have already snapped up Matheus Cunha from Atletico Madrid.

And Express and Star reporter Liam Keen has disclosed that Paris Saint-Germain attacker Pablo Sarabia has agreed personal terms after a £4.5 million offer was accepted for his services.

Meanwhile, Antonio only has 18 months remaining on his current £85,000-per-week contract with West Ham, meaning this January could be the final opportunity the capital club have to receive a substantial fee for him.

It remains to be seen if Lopetegui still wants the Jamaica international now Sarabia is set to sign, though.

What has Taylor said about Antonio?

Taylor has doubts over Wolves’ apparent interest in Antonio, especially as Raul Jimenez is now back fit and firing for Lopetegui’s charges.

In an interview with GMS, he said: “I am a little bit, it has sort of come out of the blue, but I don’t think Wolves are really looking at a striker anymore.

“I think Sarabia comes into the number 10, Jimenez is back, he obviously scored against Forest in the cup. I think that’s one that could be shelved until the summer.”

Would Antonio be a good signing?

Antonio was one of West Ham’s standout performers in 2020/21 as they finished in sixth position in the Premier League, registering 10 goals and five assists in 27 appearances.

The versatile star carried that form over into last season too, finding the back of the net on 13 occasions in 47 outings across all competitions, setting up 11 strikes for his teammates.

However, Antonio’s productivity has slowed down of late, and he only has eight goal contributions to his name in 25 games this time around.

He could still be a good option for Wolves to call upon in their current state, though, and Lopetegui may be tempted to try his luck for him.
