Manchester United are ‘following’ Jordan Pickford’s contract situation at Everton and view him as a potential ‘big opportunity on the market’, transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has informed GiveMeSport.
The Red Devils have already brought in Jack Butland between the sticks this month. However, rumours are swirling over the future of David De Gea, who will find himself out of contract this summer unless an extension is agreed upon.
Man Utd transfer news – Jordan Pickford?
Lately, The Sun has reported that Jordan Pickford is happy to commit his future to Everton, though talks over a new contract have reached a deadlock due to a dispute over pay. Manchester United are aware of this development and are said to be willing to double his wages to entice the 28-year-old stopper to Old Trafford.
Salary Sport detail that the England international earns £110,000 at Goodison Park on a deal that runs until 2024, which could mean his pay packet would rise significantly in the event of Pickford moving elsewhere. Tottenham also holds some interest in taking the Toffees man to North London and would be open to offering him a bumper contract.
Current Red Devils’ number one De Gea will also be heavily affected by the new salary cap measures introduced at Manchester United, according to the Daily Mail.
Dubbed the ‘Ronaldo rule’, it forbids players from earning over £200,000 per week, meaning the Spaniard could need to slash his £375k-a-week wage significantly to remain in Manchester beyond the summer.
What has Fabrizio Romano said about Jordan Pickford?
Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has stated that despite Everton trying to tie Pickford down, but when asked if United, Chelsea and Tottenham were keen on the 50-cap England star, he said:
“Everton will try to push again for Pickford to sign the contract, but it’s true that all these clubs [Man Utd, Chelsea and Tottenham] are following Pickford.
“It’s a potential big opportunity on the market.”
Would Jordan Pickford replace David De Gea at Manchester United?
If De Gea does indeed depart Old Trafford this summer, Pickford would be someone to enter the fold that carries proven experience in the Premier League and at international level with England.
FootyStats show that the 28-year-old ace has been in fine form for Everton this campaign, saving 73% of the shots he has faced across all competitions.
In 2022/23, Pickford has competed in 18 matches for the Toffees in the Premier League and recorded three clean sheets. Of course, nuance has a part to play in the discussion, as Everton find themselves in a fight for survival which has led them to concede 24 times in the English top flight as a collective.
Nevertheless, there is a recognition from most pundits and fans across the country that Pickford has been one of very few shining lights at Goodison Park in a period of turmoil on and off the field.
Should De Gea elect to part ways with Manchester United in a few months, Pickford would be a sensible replacement that could excel at Old Trafford if this potential transfer is to materialise.
