Official | Borussia Dortmund sign Julian Ryerson

Borussia Dortmund have today announced the signing of Norwegian right-back Julian Ryerson from Union Berlin for a reported €5m. The 25-year-old has signed a contract until 2026.

Die Schwarzgelben activated a clause in Ryerson’s contract following an injury to Thomas Meunier, which is expected to keep the Belgian out for around six weeks, potentially missing BVB’s Champions League game against Chelsea at the Westfalenstadion in mid-February.

Meunier’s injury left Edin Terzic with Niklas Süle, a central-defender by trade, whilst Marius Wolf prefers an advanced role and Mateu Morey is making his way back following a long-term injury. Ryerson can also operate at left-back, which could be beneficial to BVB with OGC Nice showing an interest in Raphaël Guerreiro.

“It’s not easy for me to leave Union Berlin because I owe a lot to this special club, my teammates, the staff and the fans,” said Ryerson. “I will always have fond memories of my time at the Alten Försterei.

“Now I’m looking forward to a new chapter with Borussia Dortmund and would like to help BVB achieve its goals in the Bundesliga, the Champions League and in the DFB Pokal.”

Borussia Dortmund are sixth, occupying the UEFA Europa Conference League spot, but are nine points behind leaders Bayern Munich. BVB host Augsburg on Sunday as they look to make an improvement on their Bundesliga form prior to the World Cup, losing their last two games of 2022.
