Chelsea now have £40m star ‘on the radar’ at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea have Southampton defender Kyle Walker-Peters on their ‘radar’ as they look for cover and competition for Reece James, journalist Simon Phillips has told GiveMeSport.

The Blues are known to be in the market for a new right-back this January and have identified the talented 25-year-old as a potential target.

Chelsea transfer news – Walker-Peters

Chelsea’s interest in Walker-Peter’s was first reported by the Daily Mail back in August, although Southampton’s sizeable price tag seemingly put off his numerous potential suitors.

The Saints were said to value the England international at £40 million, while Manchester United, Everton and Arsenal were all listed among his potential suitors alongside the west London outfit.

Walker-Peters ended up staying put at St. Mary’s in the previous transfer window, but talkSPORT have claimed Chelsea and United have revived their pursuits.

With two and a half years remaining on his £50,000-per-week contract, Southampton are still in a strong position when it comes to negotiating the full-back’s future, though.

Meanwhile, 90min have disclosed that Chelsea are also monitoring the progress of Walker-Peters’ teammates Romeo Lavia, who they see as a possible solution to their midfield woes.

What has Phillips said about Walker-Peters?

Phillips has stated that Sporting CP’s Pedro Porro is the ‘main’ target for Chelsea but that Walker-Peter’s in another option on Graham Potter’s wish list.

In an interview with GMS, he said: “Kyle Walker-Peters is another one on the radar. There’s been links of him going out recently, and that is all correct.

“Chelsea are looking at him as well as another option, but at the moment, Pedro Porro was the main one that they’re going to try and pursue.”

Would Walker-Peters be a good signing?

Walker-Peters, who is comfortable playing on either flank, has established himself as one of the Premier League’s top full-backs since moving to Southampton on an initial loan deal from Tottenham back in January 2020.

The versatile star has registered three goals and seven assists in 99 appearances across all competitions for south coast club while putting up some eye-catching underlying numbers.

As per FBref, Walker-Peters has ranked in the 97th percentile for completed dribbles and the 89th for touches in the attacking penalty area amongst his positional peers over the last year.

It’s clear that Walker-Peters could be a solid addition to Chelsea’s options on either side of defence, easing the burden on James’ shoulders.
