Ten Hag now wants to keep £200k-a-week star at Old Trafford

Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag is planning to keep England centre-back Harry Maguire at Old Trafford for the rest of the season, talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook has told GiveMeSport.

The £200k-per-week earner has found life tough going for the Red Devils this campaign.

Man Utd transfer news – Harry Maguire

According to talkSPORT, rumours of a Maguire move to Aston Villa this month have now been quashed after the defender was spotted in a restaurant in Birmingham with his agent last weekend.

In the same report, Crook gave his opinion about the 29-year-old’s immediate future at Old Trafford, stating: “I think he’ll stay, United are still in four competitions. Maguire isn’t starting matches but he’s still coming on late in games as he did against Everton to see the match out.”

Despite arriving in Manchester for a fee of £80m during the summer of 2019, Maguire has found life difficult at United, especially under ten Hag where he was dropped from the regular Premier League starting XI this season after the side’s first two games resulted in defeat.

Transfer insider Dean Jones has recently suggested to GiveMeSport that there is a possibility that the former Leicester City man could become available for transfer during the summer window.

But Crook believes that Maguire’s short-term future certainly lies with Manchester United.

What has Crook said about Man Utd and Maguire?

Crook told GiveMeSport: “The noises I got out of United when there was some sort of vague links to Aston Villa were that he’s part of their plan, certainly for the rest of this season.”

How has Maguire performed this season?

Maguire – who has previously been labelled a “mustang” by pundit Jurgen Klinsmann – will currently be looking at the current season with some frustration, having started just four Premier League fixtures from a possible 19 for ten Hag’s side, according to Transfermarkt.

However, the Sheffield-born star did enjoy an impressive World Cup campaign, helping the Three Lions keep three clean sheets as Southgate’s side reached the quarter-finals of the competition.

His displays in Qatar earned him an average WhoScored rating of 7.35, ranking him as England’s third-best performer on the world’s biggest stage, behind Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka and Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham.

Therefore, this would suggest that Maguire still has plenty to offer at the top level and a move to a fellow Premier League club could be on the cards during the summer transfer window.
