Liverpool could break their own club record transfer fee to secure the signing of Darwin Nunez, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.
Jurgen Klopp looks likely to bolster his attacking options this summer, and has set his sights on the Uruguayan forward.
What’s the latest news involving Nunez?
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Liverpool are preparing an opening offer for Nunez, which would be €80m (£68m) plus add-ons.
Premier League rivals Manchester United are also keen on the striker, and remain in contact with his agent.
However, The Athletic has reported that Nunez has agreed personal terms with Liverpool, who appear to be leading the race for his signature.
Liverpool’s current record transfer fee stands at £75m, which is what they spent on Virgil van Dijk back in January 2018.

What has O’Rourke said about Nunez?
With Sadio Mane eyeing a move to Bayern Munich, O’Rourke thinks Liverpool could splash the cash to sign Nunez, who has scored 68 goals in his club career to date.
When asked whether they could potentially break their transfer record to land the youngster, O’Rourke told GIVEMESPORT: “You could see it. Obviously, it seems Sadio Mane will be leaving Liverpool, so Liverpool are looking out for alternatives for him and Darwin Nunez has had a great season for Benfica. Liverpool are well aware of him from coming up against him in the Champions League last season as well. He’s obviously impressed Jurgen Klopp and his coaching staff.”
Is Nunez worth it?
The two most expensive players in Liverpool’s history have made a huge difference to Klopp’s side in recent years.
Van Dijk came in and transformed the team’s defence, which led to him finishing second in the 2019 Ballon d’Or vote, while goalkeeper Alisson has helped the Reds win the Champions League and Premier League since his arrival four years ago.
Whether Nunez could make as big an impact remains to be seen, but he certainly had an outstanding 2021/22 campaign.
The attacker netted 26 league goals for Benfica, and scored six times in the Champions League, including twice in as many games against Liverpool at the quarter-final stage of the competition.
The previous year he only scored six league goals, so there may be slight concerns that he could be a one-season wonder, but if he does sign for Liverpool and continues his form of the last 12 months, he could prove to be worth every penny.
