Man Utd deal for 167-goal star now ‘very much possible’ at Old Trafford

Manchester United’s proposed loan move for Burnley striker Wout Weghorst is ‘very much viable and possible’, Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor has told GiveMeSport.

The Red Devils are in the market for attacking reinforcements this January following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo and have turned their attention to Weghorst.

Manchester United transfer news – Weghorst

Any deal to bring Weghorst to Old Trafford is going to be a complicated one as he is currently halfway through a season-long loan at Turkish giants Besiktas.

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that United are ‘working to find a solution’ with both Besiktas and Burnley, though, with both the players and club said to be ‘confident’ that an agreement can be reached.

Erik ten Hag is said to be eager to bring his compatriot into the fold for the second half of the season, but there appears to be several issues that need ironing out before that can happen.

The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell disclosed that Besiktas have a €10 million (£8.8m) option-to-buy clause for the Netherlands international, while Burnley do not have the option to end his loan spell early.

That means Burnley and Besiktas would need to agree to break their current agreement early in order for Weghorst to complete a temporary switch to the red half of Manchester.

What has Taylor said about Weghorst?

United are currently short of options in the final third of the pitch due to Ronaldo’s exit and Jadon Sancho’s prolonged absence from the matchday squads.

And Taylor has told GMS that Weghorst seems to be a genuine target for Ten Hag in this winter window.

He said: “It seems so far from the discussions between Weghorst’s representatives, and also what Besiktas are sort of saying, that the deal is very much viable and possible because they’re already looking at re-signing Vincent Aboubakar as a potential replacement.”

Would Weghorst be a good signing?

Weghorst, who earns £40,000-per-week, established himself as a very reliable goalscorer throughout spells with both Eredivisie outfit AZ Alkmaar and Wolfsburg.

After registering 45 goals and 13 assists in 86 appearances for Alkmaar, the 6 foot 6 star then found the back of the net on 70 occasions in 144 outings for Wolfsburg, setting up 22 strikes for his teammates.

That record earned Weghorst a £12 million switch to Burnley a year ago, yet he only racked up five goal contributions in 20 games for the Clarets.

Weghorst has been back to his best for Besiktas, though, scoring nine goals and providing four assists in just 18 matches, taking his senior club tally up to 167 and illustrating why he could be a sound temporary solution to United’s attacking woes.
