Man Utd facing ‘sticking point’ over £12m star at Old Trafford – GiveMeSport

Manchester United, Besiktas and Burnley all need to negotiate if Wout Weghorst is to move to Old Trafford this month, the Daily Express’ Ryan Taylor has told GiveMeSport.

Burnley do not have the option to recall the striker from his loan spell at Besiktas, meaning some sort of compensation package will need to be agreed with the Turkish club to end it, and Taylor says that is the main sticking point right now in United’s bid to sign him.

Man United transfer news – Wout Weghorst

According to Sky Sports, United have spoken to Burnley about signing Weghorst on loan.

The same outlet states that the Red Devils are now waiting to see if the Clarets can come to an agreement with Besiktas to cut short his loan there.

Burnley landed Weghorst for £12m from Wolfsburg last year, as reported by BBC Sport, but allowed him to move to the Black Eagles temporarily following their relegation to the Championship.

If something can be worked out, though, it looks like the 30-year-old will be changing clubs once again.

What has Ryan Taylor said about Wout Weghorst and Man United?

Taylor says Besiktas are resigned to losing Weghorst but want their compensation for the player.

Speaking to GMS, the Daily Express journalist said: “The main sticking point is the compensation package that they will receive.

“Obviously, if the loan is cut short… there was an agreement at the start of the season that there was no recall option in the loan, so there will have to be negotiations between all parties on how to resolve that. But I think Besiktas are kind of of the opinion that they know Weghorst will probably be off.”

Why do Man United want Wout Weghorst?

Erik ten Hag feels that his squad could do with the arrival of another striker, which is understandable following Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit in November.

“With many games coming up, I think there is a need [for a striker],” he recently told the Daily Mail and other outlets. The Dutchman, however, has made it clear that it has to be the right forward.

“You need one who can have an impact, otherwise you are just burning money.”

Is Weghorst the No.9 United need? Only time will tell, but he certainly has qualities that make him an attractive option.

Described as being “very dangerous” by former Borussia Dortmund manager Lucien Favre, Weghorst obviously brings height and a physical presence at 6 ft 6. He looks made for the Premier League and in a team like United’s, as opposed to Burnley’s, perhaps the Netherlands international might show that.
