Müller backtracks on international retirement

Thomas Müller has decided not to retire from the German national team despite previously suggesting that he had represented his country for the last time.

In an emotional statement after Germany’s World Cup group stage exit, Thomas Müller hinted that he had played his last game for his country.

However, after thinking it through, the 33-year-old Bayern Munich veteran has decided to remain available for selection should Germany coach Hansi Flick need him.

“I was emotional after the Costa Rica game, of course. It was a sad moment, especially because we were eliminated even if we won the game,” Müller said at a press conference today.

“I’ve been in good communication with Hansi [Flick]. As long as I am a professional footballer, I will always be available to the national team.

“It’s up to the coach to decide when, if and how. The goal is to be successful again. Hansi has many options in attack. I’m very relaxed, but will absolutely be there when the coach needs me.”

Müller has played a total of 121 games for Germany, scoring 44 goals.
