Rangers ‘definitely’ have an interest in Sunderland striker Ross Stewart, although his price tag remains a tricky ‘hurdle’ for the Ibrox outfit, journalist Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport.
The 26-year-old has entered the final six months of his current contract at the Stadium of Light and has been linked with a host of clubs including the Gers after negotiations over a new deal reached an impasse.

Last month, Football Insider claimed that Sunderland had placed a £10 million price tag on Stewart, who is being monitored by the Rangers hierarchy.
Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie then revealed that Middlesbrough are ‘showing the strongest interest’ in the Scotland international with the January transfer window now open.
However, the likes of Crystal Palace, Brentford, Blackburn Rovers, Stoke City and Rangers were also listed among Stewart’s potential suitors by Downie.
It’s claimed that the 6 foot 2 ace is ‘settled at Sunderland and wants to stay’, but talks over a new contract have reached an impasse while other clubs are offering significantly more in wages.
The Sun state that the Black Cats have offered Stewart £10,000-per-week to stay put yet he could earn significantly more should he seek pastures new.
What has Jones said about Stewart?
When asked if Sunderland’s latest contract offer to Stewart puts him out of their financial reach, Jones stated that he believes the deal has ‘always seemed quite unlikely’.

He said: “This deal has always seemed quite unlikely anyway, despite the fact that the interest is definitely real.
“I think £10,000-a-week at Rangers would seem doable, given what some other players earn, but as we’ve said before, it’s that price tag. It’s always looked the trickiest hurdle to me; I think that still remains the fact.”
Would Stewart be a good signing?
Stewart fired the north east outfit to promotion last season, registering a remarkable 26 goals and five assists in 53 appearances, including one strike in the play-off final against Wycombe.
And the towering forward has carried that form into the current campaign, bagging nine goals and three assists in just 11 Championship outings.
As per FBref, Stewart has also ranked in the 99th percentile for clearances, 95th for tackles, and 86th for aerial duels won amongst his positional peers over the last year.
Stewart is evidently a useful player to have in both boxes, and he could be a valuable addition to Ranger’s attacking options should Michael Beale manage to bring him to the club.
