Athletic Club are in no rush to extend Ernesto Valverde’s contract at Athletic Club, report Mundo Deportivo.
Valverde’s deal is set to expire at San Mamés in June 2023, but club president Jon Uriarte stated that the club and the 58-year-old coach are in no hurry to extend their collaboration:
“Valverde has been more than a luxury for an incoming board like us. He is a club man, he is not thinking about his own interests, but about the interests of Athletic. We are in no hurry, neither he nor I.”
Having played for Los Leones between 1990 and 1997, as well as coached the team on two occasions prior to his current appointment in 2022, there is an element of trust between Valverde and the club’s board.
Athletic Bilbao are currently in occupying the positions in La Liga that would allow them to play European football next season, which they haven’t been able to achieve in the last couple of years.
