Werder hold talks with Hertha’s Mittelstädt

Germany’s main sporting tabloid reports that SV Werder Bremen are among the Bundesliga clubs angling for underutilized Hertha left-back Maximilian Mittelstädt. 

Already linked with both VfB Stuttgart and VfL Wolfsburg, Maximilian Mittelstädt could also be on his way to the Weserstadion to join former Hertha teammate Niklas Stark. SV Werder Bremen are also said to have concrete interest in the 25-year-old, according to a report appearing today in Germany’s Sport Bild.
The German tabloid went so far as to contact Bremen personnel boss Clemens Fritz about the rumor. The long-time Werder club man declined to comment on the speculation, dropping a bit of a hint that the Hanseaten might be more interested in acquiring Mittelstädt on a free transfer after his current contract with Hertha expires at the end of the season.

This, naturally, poses a bit of a problem for the north German club. Hertha sporting CEO Fredi Bobic will certainly wish to cash in on Mittelstädt. The former German youth international maintains an estimated market worth of €2 million in the latest transfermarkt listings. Wolfsburg – rumored to be the club most interested in acquiring Mittelstädt this January – can afford such a sum far more easily.

The German tabloid nevertheless reports that Werder and Mittelstädt are holding talks. If the seldom-used fullback can be persuaded to let his contract with Hertha run down, he could potentially get a better long-term-deal in the summer.
