Chelsea are in “ongoing conversations” over a deal to add Borussia Dortmund and Germany striker Youssoufa Moukoko to Graham Potter’s squad at Stamford Bridge, CBS journalist Ben Jacobs has told GiveMeSport.
The 18-year-old starlet will head into the final six months of his contract with the Bundesliga side in January.
Chelsea transfer news – Youssoufa Moukoko
Jacobs has recently told GiveMeSport that Chelsea are the frontrunners in the race for Moukoko’s signature, with the striker fitting “their mould absolutely perfectly.”
According to German outlet Bild in November (via The Mirror), the two-time Germany international could be available for £26.2m this January, with the Bundesliga giants not wanting to lose their young starlet for nothing next summer.
However, following a season-ending injury to Armando Broja in a friendly with Aston Villa this month, the Blues are now in need of more depth in the centre-forward role, with the eight-time Champions League star likely to be given a chance to compete with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for the starting role.
And Jacobs believes that Chelsea will be looking at a deal for Moukoko, but believes they will need to work out whether the striker will use their interest as leverage for a new deal with Dortmund.
What has Jacobs said about Chelsea and Moukoko?
Jacobs told GiveMeSport: “Chelsea’s preference has always been to work the player side to try and get him to agree to a summer move and then their hope, therefore, is that he won’t sign a new deal and they’ll get him on a free transfer, which is cost-effective and they get a young talent.
“But due to Armando Broja’s injury, there is a chance that Chelsea want to escalate the situation and bring in Moukoko earlier. These are ongoing conversations.
“It’s sort of cat and mouse because if Chelsea start the process and think that they can sign the player in January for a modest fee and then Dortmund use that as leverage and Moukoko uses that as barter and then midway through the month signs a new deal, then Chelsea are chasing, and they’re being used in a game.
“Moukoko might get a better deal out of that and still not want to leave until the end of the season. This is what Chelsea are going to understand.”
Would Moukoko be a good signing for Chelsea?
Moukoko would fit Chelsea’s current policy of signing some of the best young talent that the world has to offer at the minute and already comes with decent experience after experiencing a prolonged period in the Dortmund senior side.
The Yaoundé-born forward has made 59 appearances for the Bundesliga side, scoring 11 goals and providing eight assists in that time according to Transfermarkt, suggesting that despite his tender age he is already showing the capabilities of what it takes to become a top-class striker.
An average WhoScored rating of 6.88 for the current Bundesliga campaign ranks the German as the club’s joint-fifth-best performing player so far this season, showing that he can stand up, despite still being in the early stages of his football career.
Therefore, Moukoko may just be the striker that Potter looks to as his long-term solution in that centre-forward role at Stamford Bridge.
