Wolverhampton Wanderers have completed a deal for Atletico Madrid forward Matheus Cunha ahead of the upcoming winter transfer window, journalist Fabrizio Romano has informed GiveMeSport.
The Midlands outfit have fended off competition from several Premier League rivals for the 23-year-old’s signature who is set to become new manager Julen Lopetegui’s first acquisition.
Wolverhampton Wanderers transfer news – Matheus Cunha
Dean Jones had previously disclosed to GMS that Wolves were ‘in the driving seat’ for Cunha due to the presence of super-agent Jorge Mendes.
Mendes has close ties with both the Molineux outfit and Atletico, and it seems as though he has played a key role in the Brazil international’s imminent arrival.
The Athletic also stated earlier this month that Leeds United, Everton, Aston Villa and Arsenal were interested in prising Cunha away from the Wanda Metropolitano.
Yet Romano confirmed that it is Wolves who has won the race to secure the South American’s signature in a deal that could cost up to €50 million (£43.8m).
Cunha will arrive on an initial loan deal with an obligation to buy, and all there is left to be arranged is a medical.
What has Romano said about Cunha?
Romano confirmed the news earlier today and also revealed that Southampton were one of the clubs who were ultimately unsuccessful in their pursuit of Cunha.

In an interview with GMS, he said: “Cunha is a done deal, it’s a loan with an obligation to buy for around €40-50m.
“It’s also done with the player so now it’s time for the medical and to sign the contracts. Many clubs wanted Cunha – Leeds, Everton and Southampton, but he’s going to Wolves.”
Do Wolves need Cunha?
Wolves are currently sitting at the bottom of the Premier League table after the opening 15 games of the season and scoring goals has been their biggest issue.
Lopetegui’s charges have found the back of the net on just eight occasions so far, meaning they are the lowest scorers in the division by some distance.
Strikers Raul Jimenez and Diego Costa have scored just one goal between them across all competitions in 2022/23, while summer signing Sasa Kalajdzic only lasted 45 minutes before sustaining an ACL injury.
Therefore, bringing in some additional firepower was a requirement for the January window, and Wolves will surely be hoping that Cunha can drag them out of the bottom three.
