£43m striker would be ‘vision of the future’ at Old Trafford

Manchester United target Jonathan David would be a ‘vision of the future’ if Erik ten Hag lands him in the January transfer window, transfer insider Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport.

The Red Devils may well look to strengthen their frontline after terminating Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract last month following an explosive interview with Piers Morgan.

Man United transfer news – Jonathan David

Reputable German Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg revealed last month that David is one of striker candidates United are looking at ahead of January.

GiveMeSport Transfer Verdict

While the 22-year-old has been in impressive form for club side Lille this season after scoring nine goals and providing a further three assists in 15 appearances for the Ligue 1 outfit as per Transfermarkt, the 13-time Premier League winners had the chance to see the Canadian on the biggest stage for his country at the World Cup in Qatar.

It was a short-lived experience as his nation exited at the group stage, and Plettenberg also added that he could be available if a suitor was willing to pay €50m (£43m) for his services in the New Year.

Jones previously told GiveMeSport that David is likely to land at a big club soon and that United could consider him if he made a big impact in the middle east.

What has Dean Jones said about Jonathan David?

Jones told GMS: “I see Thuram and Depay as short-term fixes, but if they were to go for Jonathan David that’s not a short-term fix – that’s a vision for the future.

“That’s putting your faith in someone to be a goalscorer so that would be a very different signing for me.”

How did Jonathan David perform at the World Cup?

The 22-year-old went into the tournament as his country’s main striker option, but he failed to get on the score-sheet as they were beaten in all three of their group games.

In fact, the Ligue 1 striker failed to start the final fixture against semi-finalists Morocco after his nation’s elimination following successive defeats to Belgium and Croatia, coming on as a substitute for the final 30 minutes.

His stats weren’t particularly impressive either. As per FBref, David only managed one shot on target from eight attempts during the World Cup to suggest he isn’t yet the most clinical shooter and still has some improving to do.

With Ten Hag admitting that United want to land an attacker during the upcoming January transfer window, it will be interesting to see whether they do make an approach for the Lille man.
