Manchester United’s hierarchy will have noted the impressive performance of Portugal’s Goncalo Ramos at the World Cup, according to Dean Jones.
The 21-year-old has been linked with a move away from Benfica in recent months, and his eye-catching display against Switzerland will surely have wowed his potential suitors.
Manchester United transfer news – Goncalo Ramos
Ramos was heavily linked with a move to Wolverhampton Wanderers over the summer, initially by Portuguese reporter Bruno Andrade, but a formal offer failed to materialise.
Back in September, The Sun claimed that United were contemplating a £25 million offer for Ramos in the fast-approaching winter transfer window despite the fact he has a £100m release clause written into his contract.
However, the Red Devils are far from the youngster’s only admirers, with Newcastle United and Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich also said to be monitoring his progress.
Yet with Cristiano Ronaldo since departing Old Trafford by mutual consent following his tell-all interview with Piers Morgan, United may be more desperate than ever to secure Ramos’ signature.
What has Jones said about Ramos?
Jones has informed GiveMeSport that Ramos’ incredible hat-trick in the last 16 of the World Cup ‘definitely provides food for thought’ for United’s chiefs.

He said: “I don’t think there are many World Cup players that suddenly land at Man United, but the Goncalo Ramos case definitely provides food for thought.
“To see someone literally take Ronaldo’s spot in the team and completely change the dynamic cannot have gone unnoticed.”
Is Ramos ready to make the step up?
In 2021/22, Ramos registered eight goals and four assists in 46 appearances across all competitions with around half of his outings coming off the substitute’s bench.
And the 6 foot 1 ace has elevated his game to new heights this time around, finding the back of the net on 14 occasions in 21 outings, setting up a further six strikes for his teammates.
As per FBref, Ramos has also ranked in the 98th percentile for non-penalty expected goals, 91st for touches in the attacking penalty area, and 84th for total shots among his positional peers over the last year.
Ramos has now showcased his ability on the biggest stage of all out in Qatar with Portugal, and Erik ten Hag may now be convinced that he’s the right player to lead the line for United.
