Manchester United target Yann Sommer close to leaving Borussia Monchengladbach

Swiss international goalkeeper Yann Sommer is on the verge of leaving Borussia Monchengladbach, according to Sport Bild.

Sommer can leave Monchengladbach as a free agent this summer, and Manchester United have their eyes on him.

His contract expires this summer which means he can start speaking to clubs in January and listening to proposals.

The 33-year-old joined Monchengladbach in 2014 from Basel after loan spells at Vaduz and Grasshoppers.

He has made 335 appearances for the Bundesliga club, keeping 90 clean sheets. Sommer has also become a Switzerland international in that time.

He made his debut in 2012 and has earned 79 caps for his national team after going through every level of the youth ranks.

Sommer has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the Bundesliga. His sharp reflexes have helped him make some incredible saves over the years.

He holds the record for the most saves in a Bundesliga game after saving 19 shots during his side’s match against Bayern Munich on August 27, 2022.

Sommer smashed the previous record of 14 saves by Alexander Schwolow earlier this year in a match, also against Bayern. 

He is adept at distributing the ball with his feet and helps his side build out from the back with his superb passing.

With Sommer’s experience, quality, skillset and leadership, he will not be short of suitors next month.

United currently have the most interest in the keeper, who is away with Switzerland for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

As for Monchengladbach, they will not be dipping into the market for a Sommer replacement. They will use Jan Olschowsky, who has been at the club since 2009.

The 21-year-old started for Die Fohlen in games against Bochum and Borussia Dortmund this season.
