After much talk on the matter, Josip Brekalo finally appears to be on the verge of a permanent transfer to Italy’s Serie A. The 24-year-old Croatian winger, who did earn four starts under VfL Wolfsburg trainer Niko Kovac this season, is likely to join AC Monza a according to multiple Italian media reports and Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
Brekalo thrived in Italy during a recent loan-stint with FC Torino in the 2021/22 campaign. The 33-times-capped international netted seven goals and chipped in a further two assists for I Granata last year. He’s registered two assists in seven appearances across all competitions for die Wölfe this year.
At present, there is no information about a possible transfer fee. Romano speaks only of “advanced negotiations” between the German and Italian clubs. Brekalo maintains an estimated market worth of €7.5 million in the latest transfermarkty listings, down from a peak of €15 million immediately following his prolific campaign last year.
