Manuel Neuer once again made key saves for Germany to keep them in the game. In the sixth minute, the Bayern Munich stopper was forced to push a Dani Olmo shot onto the crossbar.
After a strong display, Alvaro Morata opened the scoring for Spain before Niclas Füllkrug equalised in the 83rd minute to rescue a point for Germany and keep their hopes of qualifying alive still.
“It was a tough game. We took the fight to them and didn’t allow much. Big compliments to our defence – it was difficult to score against us,” said Neuer. “We believed in ourselves even after going 1-0 down. The most important thing is that we are still alive.”
The game also saw Neuer tie Claudio Taffarel and Bayern Munich and Germany legend Sepp Maier for most World Cup appearances by a goalkeeper on 18. Neuer has been Germany’s number one since the 2010 World Cup and has made it difficult for the likes of Marc-André Ter Stegen and Kevin Trapp to overthrow him in goal.
Germany’s final group game is against Costa Rica who they themselves have a chance of qualifying out of the group as they beat Japan today 1-0. Anything less than a win will do for Germany.
