Mason Mount contract saga could fail under Todd Boehly if Chelsea do not act urgently – Anita Abayomi

Mason Mount’s future with the Blues is all but certified in the eyes of the Chelsea fanbase. As of today, when you think of Chelsea, you think of Mason Mount. He completely embodies the saying of a ‘proper Chels’ – a slogan that Chelsea fans use to identify a person who bleeds blue. Despite having complete faith that the 23-year-old will have a future at Chelsea, there’s still that element of doubt that creeps in once in a while. His contract will be expiring in 2024 meaning that the Blues need to act fast.

There’s no time to be relaxed on this issue. No matter what we may believe until a contract is signed, the Pompey-born Chelsea attacker will only be around for two more years. That should ring serious alarm bells considering that he is probably the most consistent attacker in Thomas Tuchel’s squad.

Call me dramatic, but it wouldn’t be the first time that Chelsea fail to renew the contract of a gem and eventually lose out on them.

Sports Journalist, Fabrizio Romano tweeted: “Mason Mount has been waiting for a new contract for months. Chelsea board are planning to open talks with Mount as soon as possible, it will be one of many key things for the club.

“(Chelsea) Not an urgent situation btw, as current deal expires in June 2024.”

I hate to be the one to tell him, but it is an urgent situation. As reported by the Athletic earlier this year, clubs in Europe as well as other Premier League clubs are monitoring the situation with Mason Mount as it unfolds. The 22-year-old is currently among the bottom 10 earners at the club which will need to change expeditiously to avoid any form of tussle. He rightfully deserves a claim to a long-term contract worth more that the £80,000 a week that he is currently taking home.

Andreas Christensen, Antonio Rudiger and Cesar Azpilicueta are amongst players who had run out of contract this season. A contingency plan for each player had not been executed well enough to keep or replace these players and now the Blues find themselves in a rather tricky pickle. Rudiger was seen as one of Europe’s most elite defenders to date. An integral part of Chelsea’s squad, yet his contract was left until the last minute. Christensen was assumed to definitely sign a new contract with the Blues once the season had started in 2021 however circumstances changed and once again, Chelsea were hit with a surprise.

Feeling confident in a player’s relationship with the club has come back to bite a lot of fans in the backside. I believe Mason Mount is destined to become a Chelsea legend and could potentially see out the majority of his career here just as John Terry did. But I will not be naive enough to think that there is enough time to sort his contract. Hopefully, Todd Boehly and the Chelsea decision-makers feel the same way.
