Hours after the DFB confirmed that Leroy Sané would miss Germany’s opening World Cup game against Japan on Wednesday, Hansi Flick hinted that Thomas Müller could start after proving his fitness.
“He’s really an option,” said Flick. “He did a very good job in training today. We were also satisfied with him. We have one more option through Thomas Müller.”
Müller hasn’t played a competitive game since October after missing Bayern Munich’s 2-2 draw against Borussia Dortmund. In the games that followed, the 33-year-old had a muscular problem and then a hip problem that kept him out of action. Müller also sat out of Germany’s warm-up game against Oman last week.
Other than Sané, who misses Germany’s World Cup opener against Japan tomorrow with a knee injury, the remaining 25 players are available. When asked about personnel and a starting XI at a press conference on Tuesday, Flick kept his cards close to his chest, saying that Manuel Neuer would start and that you would assume that Joshua Kimmich would also play.
Germany get their campaign underway on Wednesday against Japan before games against Spain and Costa Rica.
