Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has a ‘realistic’ opportunity to sign at least two players in the January transfer window, according to journalist Dean Jones.
The Gunners are currently top of the Premier League table, and have a realistic prospect of mounting a serious title challenge if they strengthen well in the upcoming market.
What is the latest news involving Arsenal?
Arteta bolstered the Arsenal squad in the summer, signing striker Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City for £45m, with his teammate Oleksandr Zinchenko also being brought in to strengthen the left-back area, in a £32m deal.
For the most part, however, the manager has stuck by the young group of players that achieved a fifth-placed finish last season, and he has been rewarded for his faith in his team with a fantastic start to the season, as his side are currently five points clear at the league’s summit.
Arsenal breezed to a 2-0 victory away at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday courtesy of a Martin Odegaard brace, but in order to make a bid for what would be their first league title since 2004, the club’s hierarchy are considering strengthening the squad further.
What has Jones said about Arsenal?
Jones has indicated that a minimum of two new additions is likely to be the goal for the Arsenal recruitment team, telling GiveMeSport:
“I think two is probably realistic, and when I say two, I mean two first-team players who are going to change the course of the season, but ideally I think if they could get in a third too then they would.
They’re in a fantastic situation where they can actually go on and attempt to win the Premier League from here, and if they’re going to do that then they know that this squad needs depth to it.”
What areas should Arsenal strengthen?
With the Gunners only dropping points on two occasions in the league this season, a question is posed about where they could actually improve the side in their quest for the title.
One potential option is in defensive midfield, where Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey are Arteta’s first-choice options at the moment, and although they have been impressive, the Spaniard may want another option, particularly when games start to mount up in the Europa League knockout stages.
To that end, Vitoria Guimaraes holding midfielder Ibrahima has been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium by the Daily Mirror, and may be preferred to the unfavoured Mohamed Elneny in the pecking order.
Also worth considering is a new option in attack, as although Gabriel Jesus is playing well, weighing in with 11 league goal contributions this season, he has not scored since notching in the North London Derby at the start of October, and the inexperienced Eddie Nketiah is his only real back-up option.
