Southampton manager Nathan Jones will ‘absolutely’ be approaching owners Sport Republic and requesting a new striker, according to journalist Dean Jones.
The 49-year-old tactician has just replaced Ralph Hasenhuttl in the St Mary’s dugout and will have an opportunity to stamp his authority over the first-team squad in the upcoming January transfer window.
What is the latest news involving Southampton?
Hasenhuttl was relieved of his duties following a 4-1 defeat at home to Newcastle United after nearly four years at the helm, and Jones has claimed the Southampton owners were a big reason behind his decision to join the club.
“We’ve got to get results, but Sport Republic look deeper than results,” Jones said ahead of his first game in charge at Liverpool on Saturday.
“They are going to dissect things, they want substance. The lure of it wasn’t just the Premier League, or that Southampton have got a fantastic stadium and a beautiful training ground. The lure was what Sport Republic want to build here.”

However, the former Luton Town boss has a tough task on his hands to transform Southampton’s fortunes.
Dragging the south coast club out of the relegation zone will be Jones’ first task, and he is probably going to need an additional source of goals within his squad to do that.
What has Jones said about Southampton?
When asked if Nathan Jones will be asking Sport Republic for a new forward in the winter window, his namesake was in no doubt that that will be happening.
In an exclusive interview with GiveMeSport, he said: “There’s absolutely no doubt that he’s going to be doing that.

“I think everything that Southampton fans will have been learning about Nathan Jones is that he is about unity and is quite aggressive in the way that he tries to go after things that he wants.
“And I’m in absolutely no doubt that one of the things he wants is a goalscorer because if he doesn’t get one, then he’s not going to be in this job for very long.”
Who could Southampton sign?
Football Insider have claimed that Southampton are ‘tracking’ the progress of Toulouse forward Zakaria Aboukhlal.
The Morocco international only arrived at the Ligue 1 outfit from AZ Alkmaar over the summer but could be on the move once again soon enough after putting in a string of impressive displays.
Aboukhlal has registered three goals and three assists in 14 top-flight fixtures so far this season and is capable of playing across the entire frontline.
