Speaking in an interview with Sky Germany, Mats Hummels expects to receive a call from Hansi Flick regardless of whether or not the Borussia Dortmund defender makes the 26-man squad for the World Cup.
When asked if he’s heard if he will be a part of the squad, Hummels said: “No, actually not. I should know by Thursday at the latest.” Even in the event of a cancellation, he expects a call from Flick. “Let’s put it this way, I assume that he will call whether I’m there or not. If Hansi Flick takes other men with him, they’re still very good guys. Then I would use my time to prepare as best as possible for the second half of the season.”
Two players that Flick is definitely without is Timo Werner (RB Leipzig) and Lukas Nmecha (Wolfsburg). Werner picked up an injury last week in the Champions League whilst Nmecha suffered an injury in VfL’s 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday night.
That leaves Germany short of options up top. Niclas Füllkrug is the highest scoring German in the Bundesliga with 10 goals and although he received a knock, he should be fit enough to makes Flick’s squad. Another option would be Borussia Dortmund’s Youssoufa Moukoko (17), who has scored six and created four in 13 league games this season.
Germany start their World Cup campaign on November 23 against Japan.
