Manchester United are searching for a ‘natural goalscorer’ as they look to bolster their options upfront, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Red Devils could be set to lose Cristiano Ronaldo in either of the next two upcoming transfer windows and are believed to be in the market for reinforcements in the final third of the pitch.

Back in July, The Times revealed that Ronaldo had asked to leave Old Trafford for the second time in his career in order to play for a club competing in the Champions League.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner ended up staying put rather than following Edinson Cavani out of the exit door, but his departure could finally happen in January or next summer when his contract expires.

Marcus Rashford has been chosen to lead the line when fit by United manager Erik ten Hag this season and has shown signs that he has the ability to do so on a long-term basis.

However, Anthony Martial has been unable to stay off the treatment table, and some cover and competition for Rashford may be required if the 20-time English champions want to compete for silverware.

United’s local rivals Manchester City have been boosted by the arrival of Erling Haaland over the summer.

And although Jones believes it’s unfair to compare anyone to the Norway international due to his incredible record in-front of goal, he believes Ten Hag will be searching for someone with the same goalscoring instincts.

In an interview with GiveMeSport, he said: “I don’t think anyone’s going to compare to Haaland realistically, so it’s probably not fair on anyone.

“But ultimately, you just need to find an actual natural goalscorer. In that sense, I guess you could say they’re looking for a Haaland type.”

Who could Man Utd sign?

The Telegraph have claimed that United are interested in Red Bull Salzburg striker Benjamin Sesko despite the fact that he has agreed to move to their sister club RB Leipzig next summer.

United were monitoring the 19-year-old’s situation during the previous transfer window, and it’s believed that it would now take a ‘significant bid’ for Leipzig to part ways with him.

Meanwhile, Dusan Vlahovic of Juventus is another player said to be on Ten Hag’s radar at this moment in time.

The United hierarchy are monitoring Juve’s slump in Serie A in the hope that they can lure their prized asset away from Turin if they fail to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
