‘Special’ £60m star ‘intrigued’ by St James’ Park move

‘Special’ £60m star ‘intrigued’ by St James’ Park move

Newcastle United have a project that will intrigue several players including Leicester City’s James Maddison, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Magpies became the richest football club in the world following their controversial Saudi-backed takeover and saw two bids rejected for Maddison by the Foxes over the summer.

What is the latest news involving Maddison?

Back in August, The Guardian revealed that Newcastle had a £50 million offer rebuffed by the Leicester hierarchy as it did not match their £60m valuation of the one-cap England international.

Maddison has not let the speculation surrounding his future affect his performances on the pitch, though, and reportedly remains firmly on Eddie Howe’s radar.

The i have recently claimed that Newcastle ‘retain an interest’ in the attacking midfielder as well as Bayer Leverkusen’s Moussa Diaby with the January transfer window fast approaching.

However, The Telegraph state that the North East outfit are not expected to spend big in the winter window despite their ongoing admiration for Maddison.

Yet Leicester could find themselves in a tricky situation around the negotiating table if a bid does land given Maddison only has 18 months left to run on his £110,000-per-week contract.

What has Jones said about Maddison?

Jones believes that Howe’s presence in the St. James’ Park dugout will be ‘a little bit of comfort’ for Maddison should he make the switch given his similarities to Brendan Rodgers.

In an interview with GiveMeSport, he said: “I think that this is a project that so many players are going to become intrigued by now.

“And knowing that there’s a manager there like Eddie Howe probably gives people like Maddison a little bit of comfort too knowing that he’s not too dissimilar from the type of manager that Brendan Rodgers is and that he likes to get to know his players on a personal level as well as on a football pitch.”

How well has Maddison been playing this season?

Maddison has been in exceptional form for Leicester this season despite their struggles at the wrong end of the Premier League table, leading to his being labelled “special”.

The 25-year-old has registered six goals and four assists in 12 top-flight appearances for the Midlands outfit while also putting up some equally impressive underlying numbers.

Alan Shearer celebrating scoring

Premier League and Newcastle United all-time top goalscorer Alan Shearer is a true legend of the game, but when did he leave their club?

As per WhoScored, Maddison has averaged 3.2 shots, 2.6 key passes, and 0.9 crosses per league game this season, bettering the tallies of his teammates in all three metrics.

Only time will tell if Newcastle revive their interest in Maddison, but he would surely be a welcome addition to their ongoing revolution.
