Bayern president reiterates desire to keep Lewandowski

Bayern München president Herbert Hainer remains “firmly convinced” that Robert Lewandowski will still be at the club next season.

Robert Lewandowski recently made it clear that he has no plans of staying at Bayern München beyond the summer, staying that his time with the German champions is over.

Bayern, however, remain adamant to keep the Polish international, who has one year left on his contract.

“We’ve always said Lewandowski has a contract until 30 June 2023 – and contract is contract! Where are we heading if a player can end his contract while we as a club have to pay him until the last day? That’s unfair. Things can’t be like that,” Bayern president Herbert Hainer told Bild (via @iMiaSanMia) and continued:

“I’m a bit surprised that Robert had chosen this way to communicate publicly. I wouldn’t have done that in his place. He’s been at Bayern for a long time, won many titles and became world’s best footballer twice.

“I think he knows very well what he has at Bayern – a club that deals with its players very well and does everything so that they perform to their best on the pitch. So I have to say that appreciation is not a one-way street.”

Asked if Bayern are okay with letting Lewandowski leave for free in 2023, Hainer responded:

“Thankfully we are not in need financially. We want to have the best players – and Robert is one of the best. Therefore I’m firmly convinced that he will play for us next season.”
