Man Utd interested in ‘very complete’ £46m striker at Old Trafford

Manchester United target Jonathan David is a ‘very complete centre-forward’ and could be on the move after the World Cup, according to journalist Robin Bairner.

The 22-year-old has been linked with a move away from LOSC Lille in recent weeks, with Old Trafford touted as a potential destination due to the uncertainty surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo.

What is the latest news involving David?

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has recently claimed that there is a ‘great, great chance’ that David, who earns £35,000-per-week, will depart Lille next year following a string of eye-catching displays.

“Jonathan David, I’m told that soon, many clubs will move and there is a great, great chance for him to make his move in 2023,” Romano has claimed on his YouTube channel.

“Let’s see if it will be January, let’s see if it will be [in the] summer, but Jonathan David is expected to leave Lille in 2023 and many clubs are tracking him.”

The Manchester Evening News has revealed that the Canada international is on United’s shortlist for Ronaldo replacements, while the player has admitted that he wants to play for a ‘massive club’.

What has Bairner said about David?

In an interview with GiveMeSport, Bairner said: “Well, certainly, Jonathan David’s going to be a player who interests a lot of Premier League teams over the January window. Thirteen games this season, nine goals, three assists.

“He’s a very complete centre-forward, he runs the channels well, his finishing is decent, it’s not brilliant, but it’s very good, it’s very, very passable, and he’s got a strong all-round game.

“His performances in Ligue 1 this season have been of a very high standard, and of course, he’s going to go to the World Cup with Canada. And if he has a strong World Cup there, then it’s very difficult to see him staying with Lille for the second half of the season.”

Would David be a good signing for Man Utd?

David, who is valued at £46 million, was a crucial cog in Lille’s title-winning side of 2020/21, registering 13 goals and three assists in 37 Ligue 1 appearances to fire Les Dogues to glory.

The versatile attacker backed his memorable maiden campaign at the club up with 19 strikes in 48 outings across all competitions last term and has maintained that form this time around.

As Bairner said, David has racked up 12 goal contributions in just 13 games for Lille so far this season, showcasing why the likes of United are being credited with an interest in him.
