RB Leipzig have confirmed that Timo Werner has torn his syndesmosis ligament and will therefore miss this year’s World Cup. The striker sustained the injury in Wednesday night’s Champions League clash against Shakhtar Donetsk.
Werner was forced off in the 19th minute due to the injury. Scans have shown that he has torn the ligament in his left ankle. A decision on his treatment will be made in the coming days.
Werner had returned to Leipzig from a two-year spell in the Premier League with Chelsea in order to find his form again. This season, he was doing exactly that. Before Wednesday’s game, Werner had scored 5 goals in his last five games for The Saxons. Since Werner’s return, the forward has averaged 1.19 goals and assists in all competitions for his side. He was finding his form at exactly the right time as he and his country prepares for this month’s World Cup. Unfortunately, Werner has sustained a horrible injury which will not only keep him sidelined for the World Cup but the rest of the year as well.
