Newcastle could ‘reignite interest’ in £110k-a-week star at St James’ Park

Newcastle United‘s valuation of James Maddison was around £10m lower than Leicester City’s, according to CBS reporter Ben Jacobs.

The Magpies were keen to sign the attacking midfielder in the last transfer window but did not meet the Foxes’ £60m asking price. However, Jacobs thinks they could reignite their interest in the near future.

Maddison’s future at the King Power Stadium still looks to be far from certain.

Football Insider recently claimed that the 25-year-old would jump at the chance to join Tottenham should they come knocking.

According to the outlet, both the north London club and Newcastle have Maddison on their radar. In fact, they state that the latter are planning to make a bid for him in January after not meeting Leicester’s £60m valuation during the summer.

The £110,000-a-week Englishman has been excellent for the Foxes’ this season, scoring against the likes of Spurs, Nottingham Forest and Wolves so far, so you would imagine that their stance is not going to soften.

What has Jacobs said about Newcastle and Maddison?

While Newcastle failed to pay Leicester’s asking price for Maddison in the last transfer window, Jacobs thinks this is still one to watch.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the journalist said: “The valuation was, as I understand it, 10 or 15 million under Leicester’s at the point when they made the bid last window, but they’re one to watch still to see if they reignite that interest and are prepared to pay above valuation for a player with huge potential.”

Can Newcastle win the race for Maddison?

If Leicester do decide to let him go in January or next summer, it is not impossible.

Of course, Tottenham, a Champions League side, will fancy their chances. They also have a world-class coach in Antonio Conte at the helm, so you would back them to beat Newcastle to the player’s signature.

However, the Magpies are on the up under Eddie Howe and are currently battling for a European spot. Following their Saudi-backed takeover, which has made them the richest club in the world, they are also now in a position where they can offer huge contracts at St James’ Park if they want to.

Taking all of that into account, then, you would not rule out Newcastle finally landing their man, though Tottenham will provide fierce competition for his signature if they do decide to make a move for him.

With Leicester currently in a relegation battle, however, they simply cannot afford to sell Maddison halfway through the season.
