Captain Marco Friedl will return against Schalke this weekend after his two-game ban was cut in half by the DFB. Friedl was given a straight red after pulling down countryman and Freiburg’s Michael Gregoritsch on Matchday 11.
Director Clemens Fritz said, “We are glad that the sports court came to this verdict and were able to follow our reasoning. The behavior of Michael Gregoritsch, who has shown fair play with his statements, should also be emphasized.”
Friedl missed his first league game of the season in Werder’s narrow 1-0 win over Hertha BSC on Friday night. He’ll likely return to the starting lineup against the other newly-promoted side this weekend.
