Aston Villa will ‘definitely’ scout ‘exceptional’ £25m star at World Cup

Aston Villa will ‘definitely’ be watching Watford winger Ismaila Sarr at the upcoming World Cup, according to The Guardian’s Ed Aarons.

Sarr was heavily linked with a move away from Watford over the summer and appeared set for a switch to Villa Park at one point before the proposed switch collapsed.

What is the latest news involving Sarr?

Sky Sports reported back in August that Villa had an offer totalling £25 million plus add-ons accepted by Watford for Sarr as he looked for an immediate Premier League return.

However, the deal collapsed after problems emerged when the two sides began to discuss the details, including the possibility of Cameron Archer or Kortney Hause joining the Hornets on loan.

A report from the Evening Standard then revealed that Crystal Palace ‘expressed an interest’ in signing Sarr, who has been labelled ‘exceptional’, although a deal could not be completed for him.

The 47-cap Senegal international hasn’t let those distractions prevent him from showing his best form for Watford this season, though, and has registered five goals and three assists in 12 Championship appearances.

What has Aarons said about Sarr?

When asked by GiveMeSport if he believes Villa will be scouting Sarr in Qatar, Aarons confirmed that he certainly thinks that will be the case.

He said: “Yeah, I would definitely say so. I know Crystal Palace have had a lot of interest in him, and obviously, Man United a couple of years ago tried to get him on loan on transfer deadline day.

“So, I wouldn’t be surprised if he is in the sights of other clubs, bigger clubs as well, eventually, if the price comes down.

“But maybe it’ll be a move to a smaller club in the Premier League first and then to a bigger club, but I honestly think that he’s good enough to play for one of the top clubs.”

Who is Sarr set to face at the World Cup?

Sarr’s Senegal will face the Netherlands, Ecuador and hosts Qatar in Group A of the inaugural winter World Cup.

And The Lions of Teranga will surely fancy their chances of progressing to the knockout stages given they can call upon the likes of Edouard Mendy, Kalidou Koulibaly and Sadio Mane.

A tough opening fixture against the Netherlands kicks their tournament off, but if they can avoid defeat, then Senegal will have a solid platform to build from.
