Rangers now ‘monitoring’ £6k-a-week ‘goalscorer’ at Ibrox

Rangers target Jerry Yates is ‘definitely an interesting player’ for the club to monitor over the coming months, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Glasgow giants are reportedly one of several sides to have been credited with an interest in the Blackpool forward due to his outstanding form over the last few campaigns.

What is the latest news involving Yates?

Yates joined Blackpool from Rotherham United back in 2020 and registered 20 goals and six assists in 44 League One appearances in his maiden campaign to fire his side to promotion.

The versatile attacker then found the back of the net on eight occasions last term in 39 Championship outings while also setting up three further strikes for his teammates.

A switch to left-wing in recent weeks has sparked a goalscoring flurry for Yates, and as a result, he has been linked with a move away from Bloomfield Road.

The Scottish Sun have stated that Rangers were amongst ten clubs scouting Yates in the recent Lancashire derby against Preston and were accompanied by representatives from the likes of Brentford, Bournemouth, West Brom and Watford.

It’s believed that Blackpool will demand £5 million for their prized asset, who only has 18 months left on his £6,100-per-week contract.

What has Jones said about Yates?

Jones believes that Yates is an intriguing option for Rangers and that his performances have been ‘pretty convincing’ for the Tangerines in recent times.

In an interview with GiveMeSport, he said: “He’s got a really good reputation at Blackpool; he’s been pretty convincing a lot of the time too.

“He’s versatile, he can score goals from wide positions. I think he’s definitely an interesting player for them to monitor ahead of the new year.”

Where would Yates fit in at Rangers?

Yates is comfortable playing upfront and on the left-wing, and his versatility could be an extremely attractive asset to Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

That’s because both Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos are out of contract next summer, meaning Yates may be able to replace the duo if they depart while providing cover and competition in the final third of the pitch.

The prolific marksman would likely be competing with the likes of Fashion Sakala, Tom Lawrence and Antonio Colak for a starting berth should he make the switch to the Gers.

Rangers face a tough task in fending off the competition for Yates’ signature, but he could be a valuable asset for Van Bronckhorst to call upon.
