Chelsea now targeting ‘ambitious’ move for £40m star at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea are considering a move for Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie ahead of the January transfer window at Stamford Bridge, according to journalist Simon Phillips.

Chairman Todd Boehly oversaw a summer spend of more than £250 million but it appears the co-owner may be readying more investment for Graham Potter.

What is the latest on McKennie?

The 24-year-old scored his third goal of the season for Juventus and second in the Champions League on Tuesday night as the Serie A giants were beaten 4-3 by Benfica in Portugal.

While it has left Massimiliano Allegri’s side potentially tumbling into the Europa League, McKennie has managed to catch the eye.

It is understood that Chelsea are among the sides monitoring the USA international along with Leeds United, Everton, Arsenal and Newcastle United.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham have previously held an interest in moving for the youngster as well.

With the 2022 World Cup in Qatar less than a month away, McKennie will have the chance to prove his worth on the biggest stage as the US face off with England, Iran and Wales in Group B.

What has Phillips said on a possible move?

Phillips understands that Chelsea are among the sides monitoring McKennie ahead of the January transfer window.

He says that the former Schalke star is under consideration at Stamford Bridge as Potter looks to bolster his options.

When asked whether McKennie is a target, Phillips told GIVEMESPORT: “Yes, he’s certainly one of the names being considered and looked at by Chelsea right now.”

Would McKennie be a good signing?

On the face of it, he is perhaps not a player in desperate demand at Stamford Bridge, given they still boast the likes of N’Golo Kante, Jorginho, Mateo Kovacic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Conor Gallagher, Denis Zakaria and Carney Chukwuemeka.

But the club will have one eye on the future. Both Kante and Jorginho are set to become free agents at the end of the season while Zakaria, who joined on loan from Juventus in the summer, could soon return to Turin.

At 24, McKennie’s ceiling remains very high and Potter could well prove to be the ideal man to bring the best out of him.

If he is to join, his impact may not be immediate, but that does not mean he will not become an excellent option in the future.
