Bremen officially appeal Friedl’s suspension

V Werder Bremen have officially lodged an appeal of the suspension of their young captain Marco Friedl. 

Marco Friedl’s club let it be known even before the DFB disciplinary committee handed a two-match-ban down that they planned to appeal the suspension of young skipper Marco Friedl for his straight red card in last Saturday’s match against Freiburg. On Thursday, the Hanseatic club put these words into action.
Bremen boss Clemens Fritz called the length of the ban “unfair” and promised to take measures to reduce it in a brief statement on the club’s website. DFB rules currently call for a minimum of a two-match-ban if a team does not convert from a free-kick or penalty that resulted from the denial of a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Since Freiburg’s Vincenzo Grifo did not convert the ensuing free kick, Friedl must be sidelined for two games. The present appeal aims to get the 24-year-old back on the pitch next Saturday in time for matchday 13 against Schalke 04. Friedl remains unavailable for tomorrow’s matchday 12 curtain-raiser against Hertha BSC.
