Aston Villa are planning to hold discussions with Sporting chief Ruben Amorim’s representatives ‘this week’ ahead of potentially being appointed as the new head coach at Villa Park, according to journalist Dean Jones.
Having sacked Steven Gerrard last Thursday, less than two hours after a 3-0 thumping at the hands of Fulham, the Midlands giants are on the lookout for a new boss.

What’s the latest news involving Amorim?
It is understood that Amorim is one of the leading contenders to succeed Gerrard in the Villa dugout.
The Premier League side have reportedly set their sights on holding discussions with the Sporting head coach after Mauricio Pochettino and Thomas Tuchel have made it clear they are not interested in the vacancy.
Villa, who sealed a 4-0 victory over Brentford with Aaron Danks in caretaker charge at the weekend, have received a boost in their pursuit of Amorim.
According to The Telegraph, the release clause written into the 37-year-old’s Sporting contract is worth less than £9million.
The report suggests the compensation the Portuguese giants would be due for Amorim, who has been in charge since March 2020, is considerably less than the widely reported fee of £26.1million and it is a figure which is unlikely to deter Villa.

What has Dean Jones said about Amorim?
Jones understands that Villa co-owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens, along with chief executive Christian Purslow, are hoping to hold talks with Amorim’s representatives this week.
The journalist is aware that discussions are expected to be held in London and it will quickly become apparent whether the Portuguese will be named as Gerrard’s successor.
Speaking to GIVEMESPORT on Monday, Jones said: “They do plan talks this week with representatives over the prospect of this deal and are due to be in London.
“It seems like a time when we’ll probably get a clear indication by the end of the week of how likely this is.”
Would Amorim be a good appointment by Villa?
Some would argue that Villa should not rush into a decision, particularly after caretaker boss Danks led them three points clear of the Premier League’s relegation zone at the weekend.
But there is no doubt that Amorim, who has clinched the Portuguese top flight title and other pieces of silverware in his homeland, would be an eye-catching appointment.
He has only suffered 20 defeats in 121 matches in charge of Sporting and that impressive record means his current employers average 2.24 points-per-game.
Amorim has already enjoyed success against a Premier League side this season, having led the Lisbon giants to a 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League, and his arrival at Villa Park would certainly lift the fanbase.
