Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo is facing another sticky situation as ‘Portugal are better off without him’ at the World Cup after hitting the headlines for all the wrong reasons at Old Trafford, according to journalist Dean Jones.

With the showpiece event getting underway in Qatar next month, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner has been exiled from the Red Devils’ squad by boss Erik ten Hag.

It has been confirmed that, as a result of the incident, Ronaldo will not be part of Manchester United’s squad for the trip to Chelsea on Saturday.

The forward is also training on his own as further punishment for his actions and ten Hag, who is responsible for discipline in the first-team, has the full backing of the Red Devils’ hierarchy.

Ronaldo has taken to social media to claim he acted in ‘the heat of the moment’ and insisted he will ‘keep working hard’ at the club’s Carrington training complex.

Having already been ousted by ten Hag ahead of Manchester United’s Premier League clash with Chelsea, Jones now believes there are question marks over whether Ronaldo should go to the World Cup.

The journalist has doubts over whether Portugal will want to select the 37-year-old if there is a possibility that he will create problems which overshadow their bid for glory in Qatar.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “I don’t know if the World Cup is going to offer him much respite, to be honest, because the truth is Portugal are better off without him as well. I think that’s the next problem he’s going to face.

“The next thing for Portugal is to look at this Manchester United scenario and think, ‘how do we keep him happy but, at the same time, do what’s best for the team and avoid these sorts of headlines overshadowing our World Cup campaign?'”
