Manchester United must get Darwin Nunez deal over the line

Manchester United have made an opening proposal for Benfica striker Darwin Nunez – let’s not mess around here, it’s a deal that needs to be done.

According to ManUtdNews, new manager Erik ten Hag wants a new striker this summer and Nunez is his number one target.

United have reportedly made a €105 million bid for the 22-year-old with €75m paid up front and the rest in achievable clauses.

Nunez was superb for Benfica last season, bagging 34 goals in 41 appearances. His performances in the Champions League attracted admiring glances from across Europe.

Having netted against several of Europe’s top teams, there are no doubts about Nunez’s ability to cut it at the highest level.

United’s failure to qualify for the Champions League could scupper their hopes of signing Nunez, particularly with Real Madrid rumoured to be interested in securing his services.

However, this is a signing United simply have to get over the line if they are to have any chance of returning to the upper echelons of European football.

The Uruguayan has been touted as a natural successor to Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani at international level, highlighting the esteem in which he is held.

His addition to the ranks at Old Trafford would be a major step in demonstrating that the club is serious about challenging Europe’s big guns again.

He would also give United’s fans a new hero to latch on to. Nunez has the ability to have the same impact on United as Eric Cantona – we all know how that worked out.

The Red Devils have slipped way off the pace since Sir Alex Ferguson retired and desperately need something to spark a revival.

Appointing ten Hag as manager was a step in the right direction. Delivering the striker he wants as one of the biggest Premier League transfers this summer would undoubtedly be another.
