Arsenal transfer target Cody Gakpo would ‘back himself’ to help the Gunners into the Champions League if he were to sign from PSV Eindhoven in January, according to journalist Paul Brown.

Mikel Arteta splashed more than £100 million on new signings in the summer transfer window but could soon invest further.

What is the latest on Gakpo?

The Gunners are among the sides lining up a potential move for the 23-year-old in January, according to The Athletic.

The report goes on to state that Real Madrid and Manchester United are also monitoring his progress after catching the eye in the Eredivisie this season.

In the summer, it was understood that the Dutch giants had slapped a £38 million price tag on their talisman although it remains to be seen whether that has risen since.

PSV may feel inclined to raise their valuation, with Gakpo scoring 13 goals in 18 games at the start of the 2022-23 campaign and providing another 11 assists as well.

What has Brown said on a potential move?

Brown believes that Gakpo would be confident of hitting the ground running if he were to join Arsenal in January.

The journalist believes that whether or not the Dutchman has faith in Arteta’s project will decide if he moves to north London.

Brown told GIVEMESPORT: “It would be a case of whether he thinks they’re capable of staying in the position they’re in and achieving that Champions League position. You’d certainly think that a player like Gakpo would back himself, if he was to move in January, to help them do that.”

Where would Gakpo fit into Arteta’s side?

This season has seen the nine-cap Netherlands international predominantly play on the left wing for his club side.

It is a position that has been occupied by Gabriel Martinelli throughout the current campaign and, with the Brazilian impressing, may not be an easy avenue to first-team football.

But Gakpo’s versatility is key. Over the course of his career, he has played in every position across the attack as well as in attacking midfield.

If Arsenal are to conquer the likes of Manchester City at some point, they will need a deep pool of talent to call upon in every position.

There is no doubt that Gakpo has the ability to become a regular at Arsenal but he will get opportunities regardless.
