Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has identified Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus as his ‘number one target’ ahead of a potential summer rebuild at the Emirates Stadium, according to Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor.
Alexandre Lacazette is set to leave the Gunners when his contract expires in a matter of weeks, while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang departed by mutual consent in February, so the north Londoners could be light on attacking options unless a new frontman is drafting in during the upcoming transfer window.
What’s the latest news involving Jesus?
Arsenal missed out on a return to Champions League football by a two-point margin last season and it appears Arteta has set his sights on plucking Jesus from Manchester City in order to make his side more potent.
The Gunners are understood to be increasingly confident of sealing the deal thanks to positive negotiations taking place behind the scenes.
It seems Jesus has been on Arsenal’s radar for a prolonged period of time as technical director Edu has reportedly been locked in discussions with the 25-year-old’s representatives for a number of months and he is thought to be open to the prospect of a move to the Emirates Stadium.
However, the Gunners are facing competition from north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in pursuit of a deal.
Jesus will shortly enter the final 12 months of his £91,000-per-week contract at Manchester City, potentially increasing the possibility of a transfer being in the offing.

What has Ryan Taylor said about Jesus?
Taylor understands that Arsenal are going all out to ensure they win the race for Jesus’ services this summer.
The journalist feels the Brazilian could be the only frontman to arrive at the Emirates Stadium as Eddie Nketiah is set to extend his stay.
Taylor told GIVEMESPORT: “Jesus is definitely the number one target, but I do think they’re leaning towards only signing one striker this summer if Nketiah stays.
“I know his contract has been agreed, but I don’t think it’s been made official yet. Many people were expecting them to sign two strikers given that Lacazette is off as well as Aubameyang leaving in February.”
Are Arsenal likely to beat Tottenham to Jesus’ signature?
Tottenham hold the upper-hand in terms of being able to offer Jesus Champions League football next season thanks to finishing the 2021/22 campaign in the Premier League’s top four.
However, Arsenal appear to be in pole position to acquire Jesus, who boasts an eye-catching record of 116 goals over the course of his club career.
A key factor could be the fact that Arteta was previously Pep Guardiola’s assistant manager at Manchester City and, as a result, he has worked with the 54-cap Brazil international before.
Journalist Pete O’Rourke has told GIVEMESPORT that he feels Arteta’s influence could be pivotal in the Gunners’ chase.
