50 y/o manager ‘interested’ in replacing Gerrard at Villa Park

Aston Villa could sack head coach Steven Gerrard as Mauricio Pochettino is ‘interested’ in moving into the Villa Park dugout, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Gerrard has been at the helm for less than a year, having been handed the reins last November, but it seems his days in charge may be numbered.

What’s the latest news involving Pochettino?

According to The Telegraph, Villa will make an ambitious attempt to lure Pochettino to the Midlands if Gerrard fails to survive the most critical week of his reign.

The report suggests Gerrard could be axed if positive results are not picked up against Fulham and Brentford in the coming days, with former Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton chief Pochettino top of their shortlist of potential successors.

It is understood that Pochettino is plotting a return to the English top flight and he is not only interested in holding talks with clubs competing in the Champions League.

The 50-year-old has been out of work since he was sacked by French giants Paris Saint-Germain during the summer.

Pochettino was reportedly under consideration to take over at Chelsea ahead of Graham Potter being appointed last month, while he also snubbed an approach from Ligue 1 side Nice recently.

What has Dean Jones said about Pochettino?

Jones understands that Pochettino is open to succeeding Gerrard in the Villa hot seat as pressure grows on the 42-year-old.

The journalist feels the Midlands giants cannot afford to overlook the Argentinian and they should act as soon as possible.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “It might not be ethical to go digging for a new manager while the other one is still in place.

“But we’ve said for a while that we understand Pochettino is interested in this job. That is, for me, something that Aston Villa cannot ignore.”

Would Pochettino be a good appointment by Villa?

Pochettino may have been shown the door by PSG during the close season, but he still clinched the Ligue 1 title, along with Coupe de France and Trophee des Champions glory, during his reign.

The South American only suffered 15 defeats while in the Parc des Princes dugout, which emphasises that he would bring a winning mentality to Villa.

Pochettino has already shown that he is capable of enjoying success in the Premier League too, having won 132 of his 256 matches in the competition, and that will be another plus point for Villa owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens.

Gerrard is currently skating on thin ice, with his side sitting precariously above the relegation zone, and the appointment of Pochettino would show the ambition of the Villa hierarchy.
