In a recent report, the Daily Mirror (2nd June, Page 57) stated that West Ham United are locked in a three-way battle for Manchester United ace Jesse Lingard who is set to leave the club this summer. It is believed that the Hammers could face competition in the form of Newcastle United and AS Roma in the race to sign the English playmaker.
Lingard’s Unimpressive Season At Manchester
Lingard had a frustrating campaign at Old Trafford recently as he struggled to earn any meaningful playing time under the stewardship of Ralf Rangnick. The Warrington-born talent made 22 appearances for the Red Devils this season, netting two goals and securing one assist in all competitions.
The 29-year-old has seen most of his game time come as a substitute which could be why he is only averaging 0.5 shots, 0.5 key passes and 0.1 dribbles per game in the Premier League.
However, he has distributed the ball really well in the opponent’s half as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 88.3% in the top tier of English football (stats via whoscored).
Is Lingard A Decent Option For West Ham United?
Lingard had a fruitful loan spell at West Ham last season when he showed that he can score and create goals consistently when given a regular run of matches in league football.
The English sensation can make some driving runs with the ball out on the flanks. He is a tidy passer of the ball as well which makes him a decent option for the Hammers to consider in this off-season.
At 29, Lingard has still got a few good years left in him to play his best football. We can expect the England international to add more goals and creativity to David Moyes‘ attack. Furthermore, he will offer some healthy competition for Said Benrahma, Pablo Fornals and Jarrod Bowen at the London Stadium in the coming seasons.
Therefore, West Ham United would be wise to engineer a move to re-sign Lingard during the summer transfer window as he could help them push for a top-four place in the Premier League next season.
